Exposure therapy: are used to treat anxiety, fear, and other intense negative emotional reactions. By exposing the client- under carefully controlled and safe conditions- to the situation or even that will elicit their emotional reaction. Anxiety becomes problematic when its intensity is disproportionate. The customization of exposure therapy contains four variables: paradigm of exposure- two basic paradigms. Brief/graduated exposure therapy- exposes clients to threatening events (a) for a short period-ranging from few seconds to few min and (b) incrementally- beginning with aspects of the even and more anxiety provoking ex graduated exposure. Virtually reality technology- allow clients to be exposed anxiety events through stimulated computer technology that almost appears to be real. Verbal discretion of the event, client listens to it. Imagined exposure- vividly imagining the event: additional procedures- therapist may use one or more additional procedures. Competing responses: client works with behavior that competes with anxiety- relaxation.
