SOCI 2510 Chapter Notes - Chapter 13 - Gender Stratification: Margaret Mead, Kibbutz, Marilyn French
Document Summary
Although sexual equality is guaranteed by the canadian charter of rights, both canadian men and women lead different lives. The biological differences divide the human population into categories of female and male. Gender operates as a dimension of social organization, shaping how we interact with others and think about us. Social differences should not be mixed with the biological terms. Till 1918 in canada, women were denied to vote considering lack of intelligence and interest in politics. Nothing to do with biology but cultural patterns of the time and place. However, differences of physical ability and life expectancy proved. The best way to see the cultural foundation of gender is by comparing one society to another.
