Through the reading, it is evident that glenda simms depicts the factors of race, gender and class also playing a role through the diaspora. By reading the first few pages i was able to understand the meaning of the word diaspora. Diaspora described by simms is what takes place when a group of ethnic individuals move from their native land into another country. Throughout the chapter, simms illustrates examples of gender roles through delivering excerpts of published novels, poems and short stories. The depicted black female in these stories is often characterized to be exploited by a white male whom she works as a mistress for, a nanny living with a white family or a working machine in agriculture.
