SOCI 3430 Chapter Notes -Neoliberalism
Document Summary
David harvey"s, a brief history of neoliberalism, chapter three deftly traces the history and emergence of neoliberal policies. I personally would not have been able to articulate the concept of neoliberalism myself without the introduction of this chapter. Throughout this chapter, harvey mainly focuses on how neoliberalism plays a role within the state and the individuals that are employed with the policies and the privatization of industries. Through the chapter, he characterizes neoliberalism as an economic system, however one which requires a complementary political component, which has pursued in certain cases to reconstitute or newly construct capitalist class power. Even through policies, neoliberalism has several contradictions and tensions within its practise. Harvey notes that neoliberalism has some theoretical difficultly when confronted with monopoly power, market collapses and collective action, but is noted that these tensions have always been transitioned into advantages through temporary fixes.
