Document Summary

The field of international relations concerns the relationships among the world"s governments. Closely connected with other actors, social structures and processes, and geographical and historical influences. Hallmarks of globalization are expanding communications technology and integrated markets. Interest in stopping climate change vs. an interest in using fossil fuels to benefit the domestic economy. Strength of a military alliance vs. minimizing personal contributions. Collective goods problem; the problem of how to provide something that benefits all members of a group regardless of what each member contributes to it. This problem is less prevalent in smaller groups because there is more accountability; more acute in international relations because each nation is sovereign and has no responsibility to a central authority. In domestic politics within countries, the government can force individuals to do things that are not in their personal self-interest with the threat of punishment if they do not comply.
