CHE-1102 Chapter Notes - Chapter 11: Exothermic Process, Electronegativity, Surface Tension

Document Summary

This force is not as strong as the intramolecular forces , which are the forces the hold compounds together. It is the charge between a cation and an anion. In solutions, this is the interaction between an ion in a polar solvent such as water. In an aqueous solution, the cation is attracted to the partial negative charge of the oxygen in water and the anion is attracted to the partial positive charge of hydrogen in water. Dipole moment: two equal but opposite charges are separated by distance. When the electronegativity of one is stronger than the other, then it is more polar. Molecules that have lone pairs on the central atom have a dipole moment because they are polar. Molecules that have different types of atoms surrounding it often have a dipole moment. Molecules with permanent dipoles, which are polar molecules, are attracted to each other.
