Document Summary
How are motor speech disorders treated: treatment goals. Goal is to learn or relearn accurate production of speech for improved speech intelligibility. A primary goal of treatment is that an individual not only learn a new skill but also maintain that skill over time. A second important goal is generalization- application or transfer of a skill to related but untrained movement patterns. Treatment should aim to facilitate an individual"s u(cid:374)de(cid:396)lyi(cid:374)g capacity fo(cid:396) movement so that untrained tasks also improve. Response generalization- brings improvements in untrained tasks also improve. Stimulus generalization- brings improvement in targeted behaviors in different contexts, tasks, or settings: treatment targets. A clinician may target improved intelligibility of certain speech sounds of words while also targeting improved tongue strength and range of motion. Activities targeting the latter are called oral motor exercises.
