Document Summary

A line is a finite mark connected to fixed points; art and design"s most fundamental element. The lines that can be perceived in nature led to the formation of a writing system such as pictograms, or pictures that represent words or ideas. In order to be perceived, a line must have length and width. In mathematics, lines are formed by connected points, but in art lines are connected by dots, which are points that have a measurable size. A line"s length and width is its measure of line. Some lines beg to be measured, whereas others seem impossible to measure. Varying length, width, and direction of lines adds movement and complexity. The quality of line refers to its measure and characteristics. Variation and manipulation of line quality can convey certain feelings. Lines can define shapes, become shapes, give direction, convey movement, or with hatchings fine parallel lines or crossed lines to represent shading can suggest volume.
