Document Summary

Alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and illegal prescription drug use have reached epidemic proportions in the united states, with the incidence rising in younger age groups, particularly among adolescents and young adults. One of the goals of healthy people 2020 is to reduce substance abuse to protect the health, safety, and quality of life for all, especially children (u. s. department of health and human services, 2010). The major challenge facing in our country is the opioid epidemic. The overriding concern about using mind-altering substances is that these substances compromise health, and the continued use will lead to addiction. Keyconcepts addiction is a condition of continued use of substances (or reward-seeking behaviors) despite adverse consequences. Physiologic dependence can develop with many different types of medications such as beta- blockers, antidepressants, opioids, antianxiety agents, and others. As long as medications are used for their intended purposes and under the supervision of qualified health care providers, physiologic dependence is a part of treatment.
