A convoluted model becomes an elegant theory: elegant suggest gracefully concise . Burgoon uses this as what is predicted not what is desired: context- begins with social norms ex. Closeness in relation to a culture: relationship- include similarity, familiarity m liking and relative status, communicator characteristics include age , appearance , personality etc. Violation valence : referring to the positive or negative value we place on a behavior. Communicator reward valence: social penetration theory suggests we live in an interpersonal economy in which we take stock of the relational value of those we meet . Interaction adaptation- adjusting expectations: evt has been used to explain/predict attitudes/behaviors in a variety of communication contexts, ex: men are pleasantly surprised when the woman initiates the first date. It happens all the time but whether or not it is good or bad depends on the individual.
