Document Summary

To play the role of the manager, communicators have to know advance practices that treat communication as a two-way process. Having the knowledge to know how to and utilize two-way symmetrical and two-way asymmetrical communication joins manager role expertise to create the core of what is considered communication excellence. Two-way communication means that those communicating act as the eyes and ears of the organization and act as a channel for information from the publics to the dominant coalitions. If a communication department has the knowledge to use two-way communication effectively to conduct more research, they will be much more effective than communication departments who don"t have this knowledge. To be an excellent communication department, you have to know how to practice both symmetrical and asymmetrical communication. Symmetrical communication is when communicators use what they know about the public to negotiate a solution that is win-win to conflicts and build a mutually beneficial relationship with them.
