PR 662 Lecture Notes - Lecture 43: Game Theory
Document Summary
Before the excellence study, we thought excellent communication programs needed the expertise to practice the model of two-way symmetry. Knowledge of these practices goes together in helping organizations and communication departments to achieve communication excellence. However, in a lot of ways, symmetry and asymmetry are opposites. Symmetrical practices show more important values about how the organization should behave. The two-way symmetrical model gives a framework for how to practice ethical communication, without making organizational moral or ethical judgements. Communicators practicing symmetrical models play an important role in changing the behaviors of dominant coalitions. This brings the dominant coalition and public closer together. The two-way symmetrical model gives a clear framework for socially responsible organizational practices. Game theory is used to suggest how organizations play pr as a mixed motive game where both sides try to achieve their own interests. A player in this game benefits from the ability to view issues conflicting with each other from another player"s perspective.
