Document Summary

Unit 1 chapter 7 : classification of joints. The type of soft tissue that connects the two bones of a joint to each other determines the structural classification of the joint. Three major structural classifications of a joint : (1) fibrous (2) cartilaginous (3) synovial. Main function of a joint is to allow movement: a joint contains a space between the two bones where the bones can move relative to each other. Joints in the human body that do not allow movement: these joints exist because they once did allow movement in the past (i. e. tooth and the maxilla, suture joints of the skull) A joint is a passive structure that allows movement to occur, it does not create the movement. It is the musculature that crosses the joint that contracts to create the movement that occurs at a joint.
