Document Summary

Fell off a bike, hit his head and developed a seizure disorder. Initially treated with anticonvulsant medications, but his seizures continued to get worse and became profoundly disabling over the next decade. Finally did a procedure to remove his medial temporal lobes, believed to be sclerotic tissue. Dr. scofield did a bilateral medial temporal lobotomy to remove parts of the hippocampi, parahippocampal cortex and parts of the amygdala. After his procedure, lost his ability to form new declarative memories. Lost the ability to turn short-term memories into long-term. Role of the hippocampus in the consolidation of declarative memory. Consolidation requires stimulation of glutamate receptors and could be blocked by memories = process called consolidation infusing glutamate receptor antagonists directly into the hippocampus. Protein synthesis and gene transcription are required and occur within a few hours of a learning session so that short-term memory long-term memory. Short-term memory does not require this protein synthesis or gene.
