Chapter 1: biology and the tree of life. The theory of evolution by natural science. Theory- a proposed explanation for a very general class of phenomena or observations. Theories are supported by a body of evidence: differs fro(cid:373) e(cid:448)eryday use of the (cid:449)ord theory (cid:449)hich (cid:373)ay (cid:373)ea(cid:374) a (cid:862)guess or speculatio(cid:374)(cid:863) Not to be confused with a hypothesis- a proposed explanation that can be tested. Scientists then design experiments to test these hypotheses (often an educated guess) Theory- all living organisms are made of cells. Hypothesis- a cat is made of cells (this can then be tested and the results will hep support or refute the theory) In the late 1960s: robert hook- first to look at cells, anton van leeuwenhoek- made a higher power microscope (300x) Contains concentrated chemicals in a water solution. Spontaneous generation: bacteria spoiled food just appeared. Cells come from preexisting cells: suggested by rudolph virchow.
