CAS AN 101 Chapter 16: Making a Living
Document Summary
Adaptive strategy - this refers to the ability of the people within a society learn to adapt to the environment that they find themselves in order to make a living and survive. This is also referred to as a production system. There are basically five adaptive strategies that are mentioned: they include foraging, horticulture, agriculture intensive, pastoralism, and industrialism. Agriculture - this is one of the five adaptive strategies and involves the cultivation of food by using land and labor in a continuous and intensive manner. Balanced reciprocity - within the reciprocity continuum, this is the midpoint. Band - this refers to a basic social unit that is used among foragers. It involves fewer than 100 people and may split depending on the season. Correlation - this involves association between groups within society. When one variable changes, anthropologists have noted the tendency for another variable to change as well.
