Rise of divisive politics: hamilton"s program: a financial plan intended to stabilize the nation"s finances, encourage economic development, and protect the country, the plan called for: Creating a national army: supporters of hamilton"s plan included financiers, manufacturers, and merchants men of economic means. Opposing plan: madison and jefferson: envisioned a republic of independent farmers who sold their goods through free trade: overall, southerners disliked the plan. Also, the southern states paid off much of their war debt already: many feared that a national bank would fall under the influence of wealthy, urban northeasterners and speculators from overseas, farmers often distilled their grain into whiskey. Hamilton"s tax seemed to unfairly single them out. French revolution: at first, majority of americans supported french revolution. When french king and his backers were executed, however, americans became divided: jefferson and his followers believed that the french revolution was a victory for self-government everywhere. Political parties: 2 parties emerge: federalists and republicans.
