Chapter 1 before philosophy: myth in hesiod and. Philosophy: love of wisdom began when people started questioning why they should believe myths and how they know if the myths are true. Socrates: accused of not believing in the city"s gods and of corrupting the youth of athens. Theogony: means origin or birth of the gods . Hesiod wrote this towards the end of the 8th century bc. Claims that the gods came to him and gave him authority to tell of their story. The story is supposedly backed by the authority of the chief god and embody the remembrance of events long past, thus they are worthy of belief. Gods: are born, their origin is explicitly sexual. Giver of good things so they deserve reverence and gratitude. Quarrel amongst themselves and are not above lies, adultery, and favoritism, each guards something important and dear to the humans. See that wickedness is punished and virtue is rewarded.
