Define measurement and give several examples of measurement in. Explain what a psychological construct is and give examples. Measurement- the assignment of scores to individuals so that the scores represent some characteristic of the individual. Psychological measurements are referred to as psychometrics, and cannot be observed directly. Constructs- variables that include personality traits, emotional traits, and abilities. Openness to experience- fantasy, aesthetics, feelings, actions, ideas, values. Conscientiousness- competence, order, dutifulness, achievement striving, self-discipline, deliberation. Extraversion- warmth, gregariousness, assertiveness, activity, excitement seeking, positive emotions. Agreeableness- trust, straight-forwardness, altruism, compliance, modesty, tender- mindedness. Conceptual definition- psychological construct that describes the behaviors and internal processes that make up that construct, along with how it relates to other variables. Operational definition- definition of a variable in terms of precisely how it is to be measured, and are typically categorized in three different measures. Self-report measures- those in which participants report their own thoughts, feelings, and actions.
