Four basic methods of research that connect traits with behavior: single-trait approach, many-trait approach, essential-trait approach, typological approach. Determine which traits correlate with the specific behavior. Then try to explain the pattern of correlations. However, researchers can find people who resemble each other. The relationship between one"s private inner reality and the external self presented to others. Vary in their inner and outer selves and in how they perform in different settings. The same outside as inside and do not vary much from setting to setting. Hospitalized patients for inappropriate behaviors had low scores. Emotions are easier to perceive when the person speaking is a high self- monitor. ***high self-monitors tend to look to the environment for clues to how they are feeling whereas low self-monitors look within. Can be so extreme that it classifies as a personality disorder. Theory as to why narcissists act the way they do.
