ILRLR 2050 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Nonunion, National Labor Relations Board, Bargaining Unit
Document Summary
The organizing process: need at least 30% of interest to go forward with nlrb election. With 50% of support, can ask for voluntary recognition as well. Followed by investigation to determine if there should be election; need to determine bargaining unit/agents, interest, etc. Can order an election to take place -- election can vary in formality, speed, etc depending on degree of disagreement. Campaigning will increase on both sides, with heavier nlrb restrictions during this period to prevent coercion. Can challenge who gets to vote in the bargaining unit based on position/etc. Winning the election leads to nlrb certification; losing means a year period before another can be held. Workers might want representation because they are unhappy with their current conditions, believe the union can help improve them, and willing to overcome negative stereotypes against unions. Unhappiness with decision making processes -- wanting a greater voice, angry with managerial decisions, etc.
