JOUR 001 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Lede, Elde, Ap Stylebook
Document Summary
To put it simply, a lede is the beginning sentence of a news story. The point of a lede is to convey essential info, set the tone and entice a reader to keep reading beyond the first few sentences. As you"re formulating a lede, it"s helpful to think about what the most important thing for your reader to know about the story he or she is about to read. There are multiple lede types and elde formulas, but there"s also a lot of freedom in creating a lede. Don"t get boxed in by this part of the discussion. A compelling lede is even more important now than before because readers have a short attention span. If you don"t get someone hooked early, you will lose them. A good lede provides all the info the reader requires in just a few good words. Ideally a lede should be between 25 to 40 words.
