As a way to introduce some of the issues and problems associated with the display and reception of non-western art we need to begin with this question. You"ll notice in the following chapters that the art forms we are looking at differ in form, function, and materials from the kinds of objects often found in a western art history class. We are also examining many cultures that don"t have an indigenous term for "art" which complicates things even more. Take a few moments to jot down some adjectives and phrases. Now look at the objects in the images above. Knowing your own criteria will help you best gauge your starting point when you embark on a course about the study of art. I will venture to guess that your ideas about art will shift or change by the end of our semester together. Keep your criteria handy and go back to it in sixteen weeks to see.
