Afghanistan was created as a buffer state between britain and russia. Afghanistan is divided into 3 regions: the north which is characterized by fertile plains, the highlands which are pron to earthquakes, and the south which is essentially a desert. Kabol is the capitol and it is in the southeastern region. The hindu kush (lol) is a mountain range in the center of the country and is what divides afghanistan into these regions. There are multiple ethnic groups that live in. There is no true majority but the pushtuns in the eastern region are the most populous group at about 30 million people (42% of the population). The 2nd largest group is the tajiks who live near the border of afghanistan and tajikistan. Pushtun and dari are the two languages spoken in afghanistan. In 1979, the us supported the muslim opposition (mujahedeen) to soviet occupation and gave them incredibly heavy artillery. Their goal was to enforce islamic law upon afghanistan.
