Document Summary

Questions: mcgee and warms chapter: lewis henry morgan. Based on the time period in which he was formulating this theory of savagery-barbarism-civilization and the levels within then i understand why this would be the goal he attempts to reach. Many of his steps rely on technological advancement, so he wants to define the specific pathway of evolution that tylor laid out, wants to identify the mechanisms through which we move through the steps. Attempt to do linnaean classifications for cultures in the most classic sense of the idea (everything in it"s own box) As such it feels too artificial, and almost alien, when considered together with the cultures the concept is meant to be occurring in. These are what drive morgan"s model, put into us at the beginning" and that they grow over time. Also have an element of psychic unity, need to go through the stages of cultural evolution to grow them.
