Document Summary

Plants stay in one place, extend their roots and shoots to harvest resources, and make. Chapter 37-plant form and function their own food through photosynthesis: plants are primary producers. Structure of a plant"s body is dynamic, because most plants exhibit indeterminate growth, in which they grow throughout their lives. Starting materials: sunlight, carbon dioxide, water, other resources-nitrate ions, phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium. Plants synthesize all molecules, including: carbohydrates, proteins (from all 20 amino acids, nucleic acids, lipids. Plant morphology- includes several organ and tissue systems. Organ systems: root systems, shoot systems. Tissue system: dermal tissue, ground tissue, vascular tissue. Root systems have a taproot and lateral roots. Root systems can make up 80% of total plant mass. Although most root systems contain the same general structures, the root systems observed in different species are diverse. Diversity on three levels- morphology, phenotypic plasticity, modified roots. Morphological diversity: herbaceous plant roots are perennial even if interrupted by fire or drought.
