Document Summary

Chapter 3 cellular structure, proteins, and metabolic pathways. Intracellular fluid ~ all fluid inside of cell. 3. 2 membranes: membranes act as selective barrier to passage of molecules, allowing some molecules to cross while excluding others, plasma membrane regulates passage of substances between organelles allow selective movement of substances between organelles and cytosol. Membrane junctions: most cells are packaged into tissues and are not free to move around body. Golgi apparatus: golgi apparatus ~ series of closely apposed, flattened membranous sacs that are slightly curved, forming cup shaped structure, secretory vesicles ~ vesicles containing proteins to be secreted from cell; found in certain endocrine gland cells. Endosomes: endosomes ~ lie between plasma membrane and golgi. Lysosomes: lysosomes ~ spherical or oval organelles surrounded by single membrane; fluid inside is acidic and contains variety of digestive enzymes; act to break down bacteria and debris from dead cells that have been engulfed by cell.
