II. 1.2 The Origins of Medical Languageî‹–î‹–
A. Medical Language is primarily made up of Greek and Latinî‹–
words-- foundation of medical languageî‹–î‹–
1. Eponyms- word formed by including the name of theî‹–
person who discovered or invented whatever is beingî‹–
describe. Sometimes, is named in honor of the diseaseî‹–
first or most noteworthy diagnosed victim.î‹–
2. Acronyms- word made up of the first letters of each ofî‹–
the words that make up a phrase. Ex: MRI- magneticî‹–
resonance imaging.î‹–î‹–
3. Modern languages: words tend to come from whateverî‹–
language happens to be most commonly spoken by theî‹–
majority of health professionals. In past German orî‹–
French, currently= English.î‹–î‹–
B. Why Greek and Latin?î‹–î‹–
1. The foundations of Western Meds were in ancient Greeceî‹–
and Rome. the first people to systematically study theî‹–
human body and develop theories about health andî‹–
disease were the ancient Greeks. Hippocratic Oath=î‹–
foundation of modern medical ethical codes=î‹–
Hippocrates who lives in 460 to 370 BC. Father of Westernî‹–
medicine.î‹–î‹–
a) Galen in Rome, made great advancements of ourî‹–
human body understanding and how diseases andî‹–
drugs affected and worked in us.î‹–î‹–

b) Medical advances occurred frequently duringî‹–
scientific revolution.î‹–î‹–
2. Latin was the global language of the scientificî‹–
revolution(16th-18th century) time of enormousî‹–
discoveries in physics, biology, chemistry, and humanî‹–
anatomy.î‹–î‹–
a) Rapid increase of human knowledge= scientificî‹–
method= set of techniques developed in this time isî‹–
still used today such as observation andî‹–
experimentation for developing, testing andî‹–
proving or disproving hypotheses.î‹–î‹–

3. Dead languages don’t change- no one speaks them

A. Each medical word is a description of some aspect of healthî‹–

B. Understand the way the language works, meaning of theî‹–
individual words and be able to break down and understandî‹–
new words you have never seen.î‹–î‹–
IV. 1.4 How to Pronounce Med Language Termsî‹–î‹–
A. Many words come from foreign languagesî‹–î‹–
B. Some of the words are really longî‹–î‹–
C. Best way to learn the terms is by encountering them in context.î‹–î‹–
D. Syllable emphasisî‹–î‹–
1. Only syllables that need to focus on are last three. Countî‹–
