BISC 3166 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Uracil, Transfer Rna, Intermembrane Space
Document Summary
Exam 1 1: properties of living things. Energy in biology system: plants trap radiant energy from the sun by extracting carbon and oxygen from carbon dioxide, nitrogen (soil), and hydrogen and oxygen from water (to make amino acids, animals- cannot trap energy. Use carbon and nitrogen from the air and soil. (respiration) In both plants and animals- if they produce more energy than they need, the excess energy is stored in chemical bonds: glycogen- glucose polymer and lipid molecule; found in animals. Energy is used to perform work: energy- the capacity to do work, chemical work- making and breaking of chemical bonds. Potential energy can perform work, but it has to become kinetic energy first. Exam 1 2: 1st law of thermo (law of conservation)- total amount of energy in the universe is constant. The universe is considered a closed system- nothing enters or leaves. As the less loses organization, its ability to carry out normal function disappears.
