Document Summary

Newlands: noted that when the elements were arranged in order of atomic number every eighth element had similar properties. Mendeleev and meyer: independently proposed the idea of periodicity. Mendeleev: grouped elements according to properties, predicted properties for elements not yet discovered such as ga and ge. Predicted existence of germanium as an element with an atomic weight between that of zinc and arsenic, but with chemical properties similar to those of silicon. Main group elements: a. k. a. representative elements, elements in groups 1a through 7a. Noble gases: found in group 8a, have completely filled p subshells. Transition metals: found in group 1b and 3 b through 8b. Group 2b have filled d subshells and are not transition metals. F-block transition elements: lanthanides and actinides. Valence electrons: outermost electrons of an atom, involved in formation of chemical bonds, smilier of valence electron configurations help predict chemical properties.
