Week 3 reading (chap 3, 5 & 6) Chap 3: economics and the space of dev: tales of growth and capital. Problem of modernity and theories of economic dev to draw a picture/representation of the world -> not a real understanding. Economics as a neutral representation of the world vs. a cultural discourse. Western economics: composed of systems of production, power, and signification. Cultural forms through which human beings are made into producing subjects (59) Industrialization was not natural: the thought of the system and the way the world runs had to change to get people to march on to the factories day in, day out. With modernity came the separation of social life into functional spheres. Even the view of economics is colored by the dominant/powerful culture -> need to bring it out of science and back into the realm of rhetoric to understand the diversity.
