Biostratigraphic = rocks -culture-stratigraphic = fossils and artifacts or other behavior debris. Corresponding time terms: age, epoch, period, and ear (least -> most) Most fundamental principal: stratigraphic superposition -notion all other things being equal in. Earth movements can move and shift the rock layers. Require detailed local info, which restricts their application to limited geographic areas. Don"t require a special knowledge of local geological history and can be applied in the same. Stratigraphic unit: sequence from younger to older -common objects: rocks and fossils. Stratigraphic units are always based on materials found in rock layers, but diff. kinds of units need not correspond one-to-one. *goal: correlate particular rock units, biostratigraphic units, and so forth w/ time-stratigraphic or chronostratigraphic units defined purely in terms of time rather than the presence of particular materials. Hierarchy of words for biostratigraphic: faunal complex, stage, zone, or biozone. 1)numerical (absolute) methods: determine age in years way anywhere in the world.
