Drive-reduction theory: how we respond to inner pushes. Arousal theory: focuses on the right levels of stimulation. Instinct: a complex behavior that is rigidly patterned throughout a species and it unlearned. After its initial fall, was replaced by drive reduction theory. Naming and labeling of behaviors instead of explaining. Drive reduction theory: the idea that a physiological need creates an aroused tension state (a drive) that motivates an organism to satisfy a need. When a physiological need increased a psychological drive/arousal increases and acting upon this motive returns the body to homeostasis. Homeostasis: a tendency to maintain a balanced or constant internal state; the regulation of any aspect of body chemistry. Pushes by drives and pulled by incentives.
