Document Summary

One-way design: experimental design in which only one independent variable is manipulated. Two-group experimental design: there are only two levels of the independent variable (two conditions). Randomized groups design: a between-subjects design in which participants are randomly assigned to one of two or more conditions. Matched-subjects design: participants are matched into blocks on the basis of a variable the researcher believes relevant to the experiment. Then participants in each matched block are randomly assigned to one the conditions. Repeated measures: each participant serves in all experimental conditions. Each of the last three designs are posttest-only designs. Posttest-only design means that the dependent variable is measures after the manipulation has occurred. Pretest-posttest designs: researchers measure the dependent variable twice, once before the manipulation and again afterward. As long as the experimental and control groups are equal by using an experimental design (random assignment, matched random, or within-subjects design)
