2 focuses: frequency & prevalence (how many people commit crime) Trying to find out people"s attitudes & feelings towards crime & criminal justice policy. Victims surveys given to a population in individual cities or neighborhoods of interest are important for policy innovation. Surveys designed for more than 1 purpose. Closed-ended are extremely useful b/c they provide more uniform responses & easier to process. Open-ended responses have to be read & coded before they can be processed. An interpreter has to do the coding. The biggest issue with closed-ended is how the interviewer structures the questions. Many surveys have just as many statements as questions. Researchers tend to make items long & complicated to make it clear. Don"t put not in items because it is often overlooked. (ex) agree/disagree: marijuana should not be legalized. Format is just as important as the questions. Should be uncluttered & easy to understand. Certain questions are clearly relevant to only some of the respondents.
