Design- physical appearance of documents and websites: binding, page size, typography, color, navigation bars, hyperlinks, table of contents. Five goals of design: make a good impression on readers. Help readers understand the structure and hierarchy of information: help readers find the information they need, help readers understand the information, help readers remember information. Black print is easiest to read on a white background. Larger letters stand out among small ones. Planning the design of documents and web sites. Determine your resources: time, money, equipment. Accessing aids: icons, color, dividers and tabs, cross reference tables, headers and footers, page numbers. Queuing- visual distinctions that indicate levels of importance: alignment- more important information sits closer to the left margin. Filtering- use of visual patterns to distinguish different types of information. Page layout: white space, space devoted to text and graphics, make a grid to determine the best use of space, margins. Reduce the amount of information on a page.
