Criticism because toni morrison explains the cultural aspect of slavery and the reactions brought upon by individuals of that society in ohio. She leaves behind nothing when describing the explicit things that were done to slaves and it shows us as readers how the culture during that time period negatively reacted towards slavery. Through characters like sethe, we learn just how cruel slave life was and just how far people went to culturally please societal views. Sethe is the best example of a woman who is continuously fighting for freedom during this time of slavery. Although she initially escaped from sweet home, she found herself struggling to put those horrific memories aside and move on to a better life.
