Goals of psychology: description, explanation (why we react to certain things, prediction (predict behavior, control. Mind and the soul; finding universal truth: aristotle, 3 souls: animal, plant, and human, plant most basic to human being most complex (increasing complexity, needs/urges: id, ego, and libido, developed 3 psychology minds. Id- what your mind wants in the presence moment. Ego- concerned with future; reason; how we should behave in the current moment to affect future. Libido- reproduction/sexual drive: thought ego should drive behavior; bad behavior results from id and libido overriding. British empiricists: nature vs. nurture, born with what we need vs. Foundations of modern psychology: wundt- the founder of experimental psychology, 1st person to set up lab for psychology and started to theorize how we can study the mind, we have basic vs. higher processes. Different methods have to be used for higher processes like observing large group of people: not strictly speaking science, introspective method, self observations vs. internal perception.
