Characteristics defining life: structure us complex, aquire materials & energy from the environment, maintain internal conditions, growth, respond to stimuli, reproduce, capacity to evolve (change) Organisms sense and respond to internal and external environment stimuli. Sensory organs detect and respond to external stimuli. Plants and bacteria respond to stimuli as well. Organisms still grown and change while maintaining homeostasis. Living things aquire and use materials and energy. Sweating in hot water or during exercise. Basking in the sun to raise body temperature. Materials & energy are requires to maintain organization, grow and reproduce. Important materials (nutrient) acquired from air, water, soil, and other living things. Metabolism is the sum total of all the chemical reactions needed to sustain life.
