Triassic period- marked by the late permian me, separates the paleozoic from mesozoic. End triassic- diverse mollusks, hexacorals, gymnosperms, flying reptiles, mammals, dinos, pangaea fragment. Hexacorals- new benthic species emerged as rugose and tabulate corals of permian went extinct. Base of food chain, evolved from dinoflagellates and nannonplankton. Life on land- new land plants, dinos evolved in early triassic. Gymnosperms- dominated early meso flora, permian me quickened decline of spore plants. Shape of skull and highly developed teeth set dinos apart. Dinosauria- two sub groups: ornithiscia- bird hipped pelvis, herbivores, bi or quadrapedal, saurischia- lizard hipped pelvis, herbivores and carnivores, bi or quad. Pterosaur- takes to the air in late triassic. Mass extinction- large amount of magma release during pangea breakup. New niches- diversification opened up, dinos moved in. Less than 10% of all types were carnivore. All major land masses united to form the supercontinent pangaea. Seaway an embayment of deep sea projecting into equatorial regions.
