The body"s methods of dealing with stimuli caused by depression can lead to extensive and detrimental effects. The body chemically responds to stress from depression through the releasing of hormones through the endocrine system. Cortisol, a hormone secreted by the adrenal gland, is secreted in response to stress and is in excess in depression patients. While depressed the body can constantly secrete cortisol and maintain extremely high concentrations of it. Constant secretion of the hormone can hinder neuron production in the hippocampus and affect memory negatively. High cortisol levels have also shown to effect emotions and decision making.
