Document Summary

Cell division: the reproduction of cells, what the continuity of life is based on. The division of one prokaryotic cell reproduces an entire organism. Cell cycle: the life of a cell from the time it is first formed from a dividing parent cell until its own division into two daughter cells. Passing identical genetic material to cellular offspring is a crucial function of cell division. During the cell cycle, an exact copy (clone) of the original cell is produced. A key element in cell reproduction is the duplication and equal distribution of genetic information dna- between the orginal and the clone cell. This occurs in the nucleus (for eukaryotes) and is called mitosis. Most cell division results in genetically identical daughter cells. In both prokaryotes and eukaryotes, most cell division involves the distribution of identical genetic material-dna-to two daughter cells.
