Document Summary

The three signs developed by peirce are icons, indices, and symbols. Icons convey the meaning of their objects through imitating them. An example of this would be a picture of a toilet and an arrow; signaling that a restroom is that way. I once wrote my mother a thank you card to my mother and signed it with lots of hearts. This sign let her know she was very loved from the iconic hearts. An index has a real connection with the object. An example would be the bars on your phone indicating how strong your signal is. A personal example of this would be when i was with my friend bethany at a concert. The main act finally came on and i screamed and pointed at him telling her, "look! I was not point randomly but at a definite location, signifying a certain person. A symbol is a sign connected to an object through the mind.
