CMST 2010 Chapter : Chapter 4 Journal
Document Summary
Three types of signs were developed by peirce, being icons, indices, and symbols. Icons convey the meaning of their objects through imitating them. A great example of this would be a sign of a plate with a fork and spoon next to it on a gps; this would be imitating an establishment in which somebody could eat if he/she were hungry. I was trying to make a friend feel better after a break-up and left a note saying, "you"re so special, don"t forget it!!" After that, i drew some hearts, conveying that i loved her. I wanted to make sure she knew she was still loved, and the hearts were an iconic message to get that point across. An index is something that ensures that the mind will pay attention to it because it has a real connection with the object.
