Theorists often emphasize the origins of self, noting that is emerges constantly developing and evolving. One"s perceptions of self is often described as a process because it evolves and is largely determined by ongoing communication with significant others. Self-complexity- number of self aspects (student employee, daughter, etc), highly complex and multidimensional, also known as subselves. There are benefits to those who have higher levels of self-complexity -- is like a buffer, less prone to mood fluctuations, able to cope better with stress, able to mentally separate from painful life events. Self-concept: cognitions about the self, what someone knows about themselves, definition of the nature and beliefs of one"s self qualities, descriptive reference to the self, (aka self-image / self-schema / self-understanding) Public self- the self that project during social interaction, actual self concept.
