Document Summary
Use the reading and writing techniques practiced in class to complete your demonstration. As discussed in class, the best way to summarize a poem is to approach in steps almost like a math problem. The first step is to skim over the poem and look up the definitions and/or pronunciations of any difficult or unknown words. This decreases any intimidation that can come with reading a complex poem. Next, the reader should read the poem thoroughly and if necessary even out loud to gain an even better idea of the main theme or idea of a poem. A common strategy used in understanding many forms of literature is the 5w"s strategy. This strategy allows the reader to segment the poem into who, what, when, where, and why; putting together the proverbial pieces of the poem puzzle. Poem name: my old man by charles bukowski.
