Issue blows up over the tariff after the tariff of abominations south began saying they were powerless in the face of the law. Is still high enough to piss the south off. Involves the us mail but is about slavery: new group of people devoted to ending slavery emerges, abolitionists, are almost exclusively in the northern states, are absolutely committed to ending slavery. In some instances there are mobs breaking into post offices and burning the pamphlets: should jackson enforce that they must deliver the pamphlets, congress says no. John tyler: used to be a democrat, doesn"t really share the whigs political philosophy, only becomes a whig because he doesn"t like jackson. Page 3 of 4: tyler ends up finishing out the term.
