Special order 15- land grants to freed slaves 40 acres each and a mule. Johnson then repeals this first chance he gets. Jim crow laws- only at local and state level. 14th amendment- all persons born in the united states are citizens, was heavily disputed by southern states but had to be ratified to be accepted as a state again. 15th amendment- federal and state governments could not deny a person to vote based on race, color. Enforcment acts- further protected blacks wanting to vote in direct respons to the increaded incidents involving the ku klux klan. Prohibited violence or intimidation to prevent freedmen from voting. Freedmen"s bureau- help freed slaves find work, set up schools, distribute food, and help with medical problems. Souix treaty of 1868- granted the souix control of the black hills. Unfortunaly not long after gold was found in the hills so whites began to converge on the land.
