African americans had same legal rights under this act and can go to court and sue. Problem with act was it was highly ineffective. Had to file their own claims, government wouldn"t do it for them: redeeming the south democrats taking back the south. Many republican voters voted for the democrats in the 1874 congressional elections. Democrats control house of representatives for the first time in almost 30 years. In new orleans, democrats tried to oppose the republican government, Federal troops were sent in to give control back to the republicans. Democrats pour a lot of energy into the presidential election of 1876. Democrats nominate samuel tilden to run for president. Previously had to count the votes in front of congress: made a committee to fairly and honestly count the votes.
