Document Summary

A material is toxic or poisonous when a small amount will cause an injurious effect in the body of the average normal adult human. Toxic injury can occur at the first point of contact between the toxicant and the body. Can also occur in later systemic injuries to various organs deep in the body. Absorption through an open cut or wound are the most common: explain hypoxia, hypoxic hypoxia, stagnant hypoxia, and hystotoxic hypoxia, and give examples of each. Hypoxia is a condition in which the body or a region of the body is deprived of adequate oxygen supply. The main effect of hypoxia is a decrease in mental capabilities. The brain is most sensitive to a lack of oxygen. Stagnant hypoxia, in which blood flow through the capillaries is insufficient to supply the tissues, may be general or local. It may result from heart disease that impairs the circulation, impairment of venous return of blood.
